WINTER WONDERLAND WINDOW

I love Christmas and I absolutely LOVE Arts and crafts. This time of year I try to get the kids involved. There’s nothing better than forced family fun with teens.

I wanted to do something to put a smile on people’s faces. I aimed to do it in a BIG way. A window display seemed like an easy choice. I mapped out a couple of designs based on the front bay window.

I mag-pied some MDF boards from work that were going free, these were a perfect size. I then sketched the designs on these and waited until the weekend to cut them out using the jigsaw. It was a rainy weekend and decided to jigsaw in the kitchen where it would be nice and dry. this was NOT a good idea, wood shavings everywhere and I accidentally cut into the work top. EEK!

Once the designs were cut out, Ruby saw that it was coming together quite nicely. She decided to start helping. She wanted to get in on the Christmas craft fun. We sanded the wood shapes and gave them a coat of white emulsion.

We shared the painting out between us to get it done over the next weekend. Bright colours to easily be seen. The hard part was figuring out how to get them put up in the window.

I drilled holes in the signage wood and hooked up some craft wire as hangers. These hung up on the window handles. I did play around with displaying it all from the outside. However, that would have required weatherproofing the wood with varnish. It would have taken another weekend.

I think it looks pretty effective. The snowmen sit on the windowsill. The signs are hung from the window handles. You can’t see the wire either. The star we had to wire up and hang from a little hook.

With the blinds open it doesn’t block too much light and with them closed it’s like a snowy backdrop. Ruby has suggested we change it up for a new exhibit each year. I figure as we have a bay window upstairs and down, we just move the snowmen up a floor. I’ve a few ideas for another one, maybe a nativity scene or Elf’s at play.

The Xmas lights we put up outside add an extra touch of magic. I’m quite happy with the results, what do you think?
