Rainbows for the NHS.

I was really moved by the collective creative response of the nation to the pandemic, and like everyone else, wanted to to do something creative with the kids whilst they were off school and we were trying to homeschool.

Both the kids drew rainbows for the front window, but Ruby wanted to try something bigger, and it had to be something that was fairly easy for Miller too, he has the attention span of a gnat.

We decided to try paperchains – but not ordinary paperchains, but heart shaped ones. We had to use craft supplies we already had at home, so we were quite limited.

Arts and crafts supplies we used –

  • Coloured Card
  • Scissors
  • Stapler with lots of staples
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Adhesive tape – optional – we used this to attach to the door.

How to begin –

Using the ruler and pencil mark equal lines along the card. Cut along the lines with scissors until you have strips of coloured card.

We carried on making chains in the various rainbow colours. It’s so easy and both kids loved the effect. I made this their fun art lesson project. We had lots of blue left over so decided to chain them together to create letters to spell out NHS. Ruby also created a chain of single coloured hearts to hang by our door. We used sticky tape to attach it to our front door.

I’m not sure if the photo does it justice, but we hoped it would spread a little hope and positivity and generally make someone smile.
