Since starting Secondary school, Ruby doesn’t really show me her homework, unless of course she’s really proud of it.
I never feel the need to check what she’s doing as I’m aware she can be a little OCD and very pedantic when it comes to making sure its perfect, she wouldn’t dare miss a deadline.
When she came to me and asked for help with her ‘Treasure Island’ homework I was thrilled. She wanted to make a treasure map and she wanted it too look really authentic.
Here is what we used to create this:
- An A3 piece of white card or paper.
- A used teabag – still warm.
- A black fineliner
- some ribbon
- a candle, lighter or matches
Ruby didn’t have to wait long for her teabag, because I love tea, maybe a little too much. She then wiped and dabbed the teabag all over the card both sides. The card did get a little damp. We then pegged this up to dry.
After 30 mins it was completely dry. Ruby then drew her map in pencil, it didn’t show up very bright so she went over this with black fine-liner. Her map was really good, with lots of details from the story. It was English homework, so the more detail from the book the better.
The next stage is where she needed adult help. Over the sink and washing-up bowl of water, we used a candle and burnt the edges of the paper, quickly blowing out the flames, creating a worn look around the map. It was quite effective, although we got a little fire happy and burnt some of her drawn map. I think it looks even more authentic though.
We then rolled it up and tied it with ribbon, we had sitting in a cupboard. Yes, we only had pink ribbon. lol!
Anyone can mimic this homework and it didn’t take long at all. I was really happy it didn’t require anything we didn’t already have around the house too.
It looks great and she earned some epraise points (like house points) so Ruby was thrilled too.
