Easter Bonnet Parade 2.

I have a lot of fun helping Miller create his Easter bonnet for the School parade. He has rules that I must follow when coming up with ideas, which he accepts/rejects or alters. With my daughter Ruby it was really difficult to spot her little bonnet amongst what feels like hundreds of other little children with tiny bonnets, so I have one simple rule and that is that it has to be different enough to spot him a mile away.

Each year we tend to create something large. This year we went carrot!!!

Concentrating Carrot – homework hard.

So simple to make. For anyone that wants to copy this idea, you will need

  • A large sheet of orange card (you could use white and paint/colour it) A3 size preferably.
  • White card
  • Pink, black and red felt pen
  • Green crete paper or card (you could use white and paint this too)
  • Glue
  • Adhesive tape
  • Tiny chicks or other easter decoration – THIS PART IS OPTIONAL although really cute and fun.
  • Elastic or string.

Roll the card into a pointy tube, big enough to fit on the child’s head and tape it to keep the shape. Miller drew squiggly lines in red felt pen to make it look more carrot like. We then used crete paper and cut this into strips and attached  with glue to the head part.

BEWARE – We had to replace the crete paper with green card because it gave his forehead a rash and turned it green.

I curled the paper away from his face with scissors and Miller attached it all the way around the head space. By this point he looked like he was wearing a really tall carrot. For Miller the next part was fun, he decorated the carrot with chicks and drew and cut out a rabbit face which he attached to the front. I loved this part too because I got to see him enjoy arts and crafts for a little while. It’s usually very difficult getting him to sit still long enough to do anything like this.

We knew he would be wearing this on his walk and it had to be comfortable and sturdy, theres nothing worse than watching children trying to keep their bonnets on their heads whilst walking. I attached a piece of string elastic I ransacked from an old fancy dress cowboy hat and attached this to go under his chin to keep it atop his head. As you can see he was so comfortable he wore it around the house, watching tv and doing homework on his iPad.

He had a blast on the parade and I spotted him as soon as he exited the school, let alone the playground. He was really happy that so many people commented on his artwork too.
