Linen cupboard Love

After re-positioning our attic hatch from the tiny upstairs cupboard to the landing – where we then installed a ladder for easy access. We had an empty cupboard, doing nothing. We decided to find a quick hack that would give the space purpose, somewhere we could store our loot. The cupboard was pretty dreadful, it hadn’t been touched by the previous owner. It didn’t have shelves because that would make access to the attic impossible. It was a door to a dead space with a couple of hooks thrown in.

The electric switch for the attic and cupboard are situated in here, the wiring to these was not hidden in the wall and was fully on show. We used a plastic wire guard to cover them then filled the wall, making it flat again. The walls were really bad, we had to cover them with lining paper before painting.

We gave the whole space a coat of fresh white paint, I actually think it was ceiling paint, but it did the trick. I didn’t mind too much that the old hatch was still there as we had nailed it shut from the attic and it’s only an airing cupboard, I will most likely be the only one that looks inside. lol!

There was a wooden rail 3/4 of the way up the way all the way around with hooks, some missing, some still there. This gave me a brilliant idea. We had recently replaced the slats on Miller’s bed, and his old slats fitted inside width ways perfectly. We screwed some wood around the cupboard about 1/2 way up and then laid the slats on both rails. The slats were held together with a black nylon, we measured and cut where needed. The brilliant thing about these slatted shelves are that if we want to rearrange, they slide back and forth and can easily be removed. They provide ventilation as they are slatted and they are sprung for weightier items.

Eventually I will get around to replacing the door too, most likely when we re-do the hallway.

As you can see it works really well and I’m super impressed we up-cycled the bed slats. We now have a lovely space to store all our linens – Yay!
